Boy, this engagement session took some work. I drove up to Bowling Green THREE times! Twice we had to cancel due to unaccommodating weather, and even the third time we had some sprinkles midway through. Kim & Eric were good sports about it though, and in the end I think the pictures are worth the wait.

This entire session was shot on Kodak Portra and Ilford B&W film.

Cristen & Jared were married this past weekend up in Bowling Green Kentucky at Rich Pond Baptist Church, with the reception on Cristen’s family farm nearby. As with the engagement session, Labold Classics provided a killer car to enable the couple to travel in style. This time it was a choice 1955 Ford Thunderbird, which you will see featured in some of the shots later in the set. Both of the driving shots were taken with me hanging out the open lift-gate of my wife’s Mazda station wagon as we traveled from the portrait-site to the reception.

One unique part of this wedding is that Cristen is a cosmetologist, so all of the getting ready pictures were taken at Off Broadway Hair Studio, where she works, and all of the stylists are her friends and coworkers. This lead to a really cool and fun atmosphere during the getting ready portion of the day. Probably the best part of the morning occurred when one of Cristen’s colleagues put in some hair extensions and put on a novelty ring to imitate Cristen, but wound up with a most excellent mullet in the process.

If you can’t tell by the custom Converse they both wore, this was an eclectic and interesting wedding with a definite style of its own. Credit for the invitations and programs goes to my former client Megan Wright, who is a talented designer up in Bowling Green!

I traveled up to Bowling Green, KY to photograph the engagement of Cristen & Jared last week. The couple had the awesome idea of renting a killer 1940 Ford Sedan Deluxe from Labold Classics as a theme to work into the session. I also need to thank Tim Labold for being willing to help me out with a reflector and with positioning the vehicle throughout the shoot! We spent the session out on a back country road and in the fields, and couldn’t have asked for better weather.

Megan and Alex were married in Bowling Green, KY, and I was honored to be there to chronicle the event with my great friend Kay Anderson. Megan is a professional designer, and her aesthetic for the wedding was classic and timeless. As such, I created an entirely black & white album from her images, with is featured as one of my sample albums.

The fourth image is worth a special note: I’d reached a point where I felt comfortable that I had enough “bride getting hair done” shots, so I left my second to cover in case anything happened, and asked the mother of the bride to step outside with me for a moment. It was a nice partly-overcast day, but a bit brisk. Knowing I didn’t have long, I chatted with Mom for a moment and then asked her: “If you could have one wish for your daughter’s marriage, what would it be.” She responded: “Only for her to be as happy as I’ve been.” This picture was taken just after her response, and just before the tears came. This image is not a “rockstar” shot with an amazing composition or elaborate lighting. This image matters to me, because I can see in this woman’s eyes just how much she loves her daughter.

Megan and Alex chose to have their engagement photos taken out on the family farm in Bowling Green, KY, near the spot where Alex proposed. I knew that I had to shoot some strong photos, because Megan is a designer and has supremely discriminating taste!

For this wedding, I was fortunate to have Tony Schreiber along with me as a special guest. Tony is a good friend and an excellent photographer: many of his images are featured in this set. Kelly & David are friends of another couple of my clients: Chad and Jennie. They chose a wonderful venue for the ceremony: The Historic Railpark in Bowling Green, KY. The image of Kelly & David inside the car received an Accolade of Excellence in the first half 2009 WPPI International 8×10 Print Competition.

Jennie and Chad were married on May 31, 2008 in Bowling Green, KY. You may notice a lot of familiar faces in the crowd for this wedding: Chad & Jennie seem to know everyone in Bowling Green, and provided me with a multitude of referrals up there! So many of my other BG couples attended this wedding. I love shooting families who are spontaneous, and the day was filled with much humor. I’m particularly partial to the shot of Chad’s dad giving him a big old kiss right before the ceremony…

I traveled up to Bowling Green, KY for this engagement session, which was shot both in town and on the Western Kentucky University campus. The heart wall was totally a lucky find, and I was thrilled with some of the shots inside the WKU auditorium. Kelly and David were a total joy to work with, and the session came out great!
