Kathryn & Jeff’s Wedding

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Last Saturday we kicked off our wedding season with Kathryn & Jeff’s wedding at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, here in sunny Nashville, TN.  We provided a LOT of photographic coverage for this event, so forgive that this entry is a little longer than most.  Daniel and I shot for a hair over 15 hours each, and then we brought in a roll of white seamless paper and studio lighting to set up in a side room at the country club, where the wonderfully talented Kay Anderson was on hand to provide really fun group photos throughout the reception.  It was tough to distill 33 man-hours of wedding photography into a single blog post!

Kathryn prepared for the wedding at her family’s beautiful condo on West End, and some of my favorite moments were the exchanges of thoughtful gifts between family members.  I was particularly drawn to the reactions of Kathryn’s sister to her ring and Kathryn’s mother to her card, which are documented in this series.  Kathryn’s efforts at modesty while donning the dress created a fun moment as she struggled with her over-sized shirt.  Once dressed, Kathryn and I took a moment for a series of portraits, my favorite of which has her seated at the family Steinway.  Meanwhile, Daniel met the guys at Uncle’s Barber Shop, where Jeff was undergoing a straight-razor shave.  Daniel stayed with the guys as they traveled to the hotel to complete their preparations, and then on to the Cathedral.

At the Cathedral, Kathryn and Jeff chose to have a first-look, and I absolutely loved Kathryn’s expression as she showed her soon-to-be husband her gown.  We proceeded to the group portraits, and then final ceremony preparation.  One of my favorite shots of the day depicts Kathryn’s mother smiling as she brings the veil over her daughter’s head, moments before they all walked down the aisle together.  I also love the shot of the bride and her parents as they walk down the aisle: Kathryn is smiling so hard she looks about ready to burst.

After a beautiful ceremony, we took the Party Trolley over to Centennial Park for some group photos and portraits at the Parthenon. Inspiration credit on the group photo to my good friend Sam Hassas in San Jose, whose casual groups are always stunning.

I dearly love the portrait of Kathryn’s mother, which we shot outside while discussing how she felt about the day, and about her daughter. Its a beautiful expression, and one I hope Kathryn will treasure.

The reception kicked off at about 5pm at Richland Country Club in Brentwood. Now I have a LOT of wedding reception experience and I’ll be honest: when I saw the reception scheduled to go on until 11pm, I thought to myself: “no way is this party going to run that long. 9 or 10pm at MOST.” What I didn’t count on was the tenacious party spirit of this wedding’s guests and the fact that Kathryn and Jeff had hired the Pat Patrick Showband for entertainment throughout the evening. This party ran full steam until the band reluctantly relinquished the stage at 11pm: what a great performance! There’s a fun shot of front-man Gino Speight rockin’ the mike towards the end of the set. Also worth noting is that Kathryn changed into a dance-friendly dress for the reception, which is showcased in the photo where her father twirls her about the dance floor.

Wow, that was a lot of writing.

Thank you so much to Kathryn and Jeff, and the entire rest of the family for having us there to document this joyous occasion.

Melissa & Bart’s Wedding

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

We traveled up to Hopkinsville, KY for Melissa & Bart’s wedding this past Saturday. The weather was a touch gray and brisk, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits… particularly not the little flower girl who greeted us in the getting ready room. A wedding photojournalist couldn’t ask for better material than her jump-rope practice in front of the bride’s hanging gown. Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church was lovely, with beautiful light inside and many gorgeous details. The couple chose to have a “first glance” before the wedding, and Daniel did a beautiful job of capturing that moment up at the altar.

I think shots like the portrait on the rock, and behind the rail make it clear that Melissa was a stunning bride, so no more needs be said about that. ;)

There was a very poignant moment with Melissa and her bridesmaids just before the ceremony, where the girls had chosen pieces of scripture to help Melissa as she prepared to become a married woman. They prayed together, and then shared one last hug. You can see Melissa trying valiantly to fight off a tear as she embraced these women that mean so much to her.

My favorite shot of the day is the atmospheric view of their first dance, under the Japanese lanterns. Most of the guests were clustered around the space heaters just outside the tent, so this angle conveys a sense of intimacy and ambiance to the shot that I really love.

Thank you for making me a part of your day guys! You were a total joy to work with, and I hope that you love these images and that they bring back memories for decades to come.

Courtney & Mike’s Wedding

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Courtney and Mike were married at Saint Philip’s Catholic Church in Franklin, and held their reception at The Factory. Daniel and I began the day documenting the wedding preparations inside the Journey Church in building 8 of the Factory. The rain outside and the soft lighting inside gave a very tranquil feel to the preparations. The rain broke just as we departed for the church, only a few blocks away, and soon after a beam of sunlight broke through the window of the bridal room, brightening everyone’s spirits. My favorite shot of the day is of the little flower girl playing in the curtains, bathed in light, with Courtney looking on. I loved the bright, clean feel of the church, and worked to reflect that in my ceremony images. Because we were running tight on time with the Saturday PM mass fast approaching, we opted instead to shoot the group photos across from the Factory in a field, which enabled us to feature the newly-minted azure skies.

The reception was casual and fun, with my favorite moment occurring when Courtney’s father stepped up to ensure that no “funny business” went on while Mike retrieved her garter in preparation for its flight. In the photo, you can see Courtney’s mother in the background laughing riotously.

We closed the night with some atmospheric romantic portraits outside at the Factory. Mike: you’ve come a long way from the guy I first met who wasn’t thrilled to have his picture taken. I’m happy to refer you to some of the talent agencies here in town if you’d like.

I can’t say enough good things about Daniel’s work throughout the day: he’s not a second shooter, but rather an additional primary wedding photographer as far as I’m concerned. This small sample should give you a feel for just how great of a photographer he is!

Thank you to all of the vendors whose hard work helped the day to go so smoothly!
