Brittney’s Bridal Portraits
Saturday, January 15th, 2011Brittney & Rhett just got married a few minutes ago, and I set this post to go live automatically right after the ceremony, mostly because Brittney is very beautiful and makes me look good as a photographer. For this reason, I wanted her pictures live on the site as soon as possible.
My favorite shot is the black and white image of her in the aisle, and I am thrilled that Brittney’s family has ordered a 16×20 silver gelatin print made from that negative by my master printer.

Lara & Charles’s Engagement Session
Thursday, November 18th, 2010Had a great session with future doctors Lara & Charles a few weeks ago. Its always wonderful to work with a couple that is fun and spontaneous: they needed very little direction. Mom says that Lara looks a bit like a young Meg Ryan, and I totally see that. We got just about the last of the fall color at Percy Warner Park, and then did a quick set of photos on Vanderbilt’s campus after dark.
Thanks for a fun session guys!

My Buddy Kay
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010Party animals that we are, my best buddy Kay and I were hanging out on friday night messing around with my new Mamiya 250mm f/4.5 APO. One of the best parts of shooting film is buying $3700 lenses on eBay for $300.

Jennifer & James’s Wedding
Friday, June 4th, 2010This is the first of two weddings this past weekend, both of which feature beautiful Riverwood Mansion as the venue. I was thrilled to have the talented Mr. Tom Cannon on hand to provide a second perspective on the event, and you will see his work distributed throughout the set.
If you came here by way of the gallery, you may have noticed that I ran James’s portrait as the gallery image for this wedding. This may be my favorite groom’s portrait of all time. James is unbelievably photogenic, and this shot (taken on my medium format film camera) just oozes with his personality and style.
Funny story about the bridesmaids’ portrait: It was already pretty dark, so we did it inside with lighting. I told the ladies to stand on this wall while I set up my lighting gear, and that I’d pose them once the light was set up. Well Jenny decided to take the initiative and start posing her girls. She was about halfway through when I had the light set up, and she looked at me to take over the posing. I laughed and told her she was doing a great job without my help, and that she should finish posing them since she was doing such a killer job. I may have to take her along to my weddings in the future!

Testing the New RZ67
Wednesday, May 19th, 2010While 35mm is the traditional medium of photojournalists, I decided a while ago that medium format was an essential addition to my arsenal of cameras for portraiture. Medium format cameras offer a significantly larger piece of film, which gives great enlargements, and a unique dimensionality that is difficult to achieve on a smaller format. This week, I received my new Mamiya RZ67 camera, which records 6×7 centimeter negatives, nearly 5 times the size of 35mm. Its a big, boxy camera, but still much more user-friendly and faster than a 4×5 (inch) large format camera, which is the next size up.

I am so neurotic, I pulled out a reflector for an iPhone photo.
I’m excited to begin working this amazing tool into my portraiture, both at weddings and for portrait sessions. Here are some quick test-shots I took in the back yard with my gorgeous wife, to ensure that the camera was operating properly. These were all taken with the 110mm f/2.8, but I should have a 180mm f/4.5 portrait lens arriving tomorrow as well.
